Amazon has been quietly working on Vega OS, its in-house alternative to Android, and it’s finally nearing release. According to a report by LowPass dated April 17, the Linux-based operating system is expected to debut by the end of 2025.

The first device to feature Vega OS will likely be a new Fire TV Stick, anticipated to launch later this year.

Over time, Vega OS is expected to expand beyond smart TVs to power Amazon’s tablets and Echo smart devices, including the Echo Show 5, Echo Hub, and Echo Spot.

Initially slated for a late 2024 launch, the rollout has been delayed — raising concerns about development timelines. However, sources suggest the project is very much active and on track for a broader launch soon.

Vega OS will give Amazon greater control over its hardware ecosystem, promising better performance and efficiency. But the transition away from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) — which Amazon currently relies on — won’t be without its challenges.

Chief among them– developer adoption. Unlike Android, Vega OS won’t support sideloading Android apps not available in the Amazon Appstore. This could limit app availability early on, though Amazon is reportedly working to ensure that all major apps are accessible at launch.
