Google Launches Firebase Studio: Build AI-Powered Apps in Minutes, Directly in Your Browser

Google has unveiled a preview of Firebase Studio, a new cloud-based agentic development environment designed to simplify and accelerate the creation of AI-powered applications.

Announced on April 9, Firebase Studio brings together Project IDX (cloud IDE), the Genkit framework, and Gemini in Firebase—Google’s AI-powered assistant—into one cohesive platform. The goal? Speed up the process of building, testing, and deploying cutting-edge AI apps.

Firebase Studio allows developers to prototype web apps using natural language prompts, images, or sketches. Starting with Next.js, it automatically wires up Genkit and provides a Gemini API key to activate AI capabilities right away.

"Several more updates across the Firebase platform are helping developers unleash their modern, data-driven apps on Google Cloud. These announcements will empower developers to forge new paths for building AI applications across multiple platforms," Google said in a blog post.

Gemini can assist with real-time editing, such as adding features, refining UI, or implementing authentication—all through a simple chat interface that understands the project’s code base. Developers also get a familiar CodeOSS-based IDE with Gemini-powered tools for debugging, code completion, terminal access, and Firebase integration.

For testing, developers can preview apps using a public URL or QR code. Once ready, apps can be deployed with one click via Firebase App Hosting. Firebase Studio supports real-time collaboration, letting teams co-develop within a shared environment and instantly push updates.
