Google has just launched a free version of Gemini Code Assist, its enterprise-focused AI coding tool, now available globally for individual developers.

Currently, under public preview, the AI tool is designed to make AI-driven coding assistants more accessible to students, hobbyists, freelancers, and startups, offering a robust toolset for coding, debugging, and learning.

In a blog post, Google revealed that Canadian startups such as AdaurisSpoonityManifold and Cirkuit have already transformed their businesses using Gemini Code Assist.

Google’s Gemini Code Assist is powered by the advanced Gemini 2.0 AI model. This tool supports all public-domain programming languages and is specifically optimised for coding tasks.

"We fine-tuned the Gemini 2.0 model for developers by analyzing and validating a large number of real-world coding use cases. As a result, the quality of AI-generated recommendations in Gemini Code Assist is better than ever before and ready to address the myriad of daily challenges developers face, whether they’re hobbyists or startup developers," Google said in the blog post.

Unlike other popular free coding assistants, which limit users to only 2,000 code completions per month, Gemini Code Assist offers a significantly more generous allowance. With up to 180,000 code completions per month, our tool provides virtually unlimited capacity—far surpassing the needs of even the most dedicated professional developers.

While the free version offers substantial capabilities, the Standard and Enterprise versions of Gemini Code Assist provide advanced features, such as productivity metrics, integrations with Google Cloud services like BigQuery, and the ability to customize responses using private code data sources.
