IBM Introduces Z17 Mainframe with Enhanced AI and Security Capabilities
IBM z17 will be generally available June 18, 2025

IBM has introduced the IBM z17, the latest generation of its mainframe platform, designed to integrate AI capabilities across hardware, software, and system operations. Powered by the IBM Telum II processor, z17 supports both transactional and generative AI workloads, enabling businesses to process 50% more AI inference operations daily than its predecessor.
With over 250 AI use cases—from loan risk assessment to medical imaging—z17 enables real-time analytics on 100% of enterprise transactions. Its AI inferencing is driven by a second-generation on-chip accelerator, delivering more than 450 billion operations per day with one millisecond latency.
IBM also previewed the IBM Spyre Accelerator, arriving Q4 2025, to enhance AI compute power for multi-model methods and generative AI applications like AI assistants and chatbots.
The system supports developers and IT teams with integrated AI tools, including IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z and watsonx Assistant for Z. These, combined with Z Operations Unite, offer AI-driven incident detection and resolution using live data.
IBM z17 is built for hybrid cloud environments and introduces z/OS 3.2 (planned for Q3 2025), which supports modern data access, operational AI insights, and new workloads.
Security remains a focus, with built-in quantum-safe encryption, AI-powered data discovery, and HashiCorp Vault integration for secrets management. IBM Threat Detection for z/OS adds further defense against cyber threats.
IBM z17 will be generally available June 18, 2025. The platform aims to deliver secure, scalable AI for mission-critical operations across industries.
