JetBrains Launches Junie, an AI Coding Agent to Automate Developer Workflows

JetBrains, the company behind popular development tools, has officially launched Junie, its new AI coding agent, into public access.

First introduced in early access this January, Junie is designed to help developers automate and manage complex coding tasks—functioning like a junior software engineer within the IDE.

Unlike JetBrains' AI Assistant, which helps with quick suggestions, code explanations, and completions, Junie takes on longer, more involved tasks.

Developers can assign goals using conversational English, and Junie will generate code, run tests, refactor codebases, and summarize best practices—collaborating step-by-step through the development process.

Junie is currently available in IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Professional, WebStorm, and GoLand, with more IDE support on the way.

JetBrains also announced major upgrades to its AI Assistant, now offering improved context awareness, support for models like GPT-4.5, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Gemini 2.5 Pro, as well as enhanced local model integration.

To make these tools more accessible, JetBrains has launched a new AI subscription model. All IDE licenses will now include a free AI tier, offering unlimited code completion, local AI support, and limited Junie credits.

"The AI Free tier gives you unlimited code completion and access to local AI models, as well as credit-based use of cloud-based AI assistance and our coding agent, Junie. The AI Pro and AI Ultimate tiers provide increased usage quotas for demanding workflows. On top of all that, the All Products Pack and dotUltimate subscriptions will now come with AI Pro included," the company said in a blog post.

Paid tiers—AI Pro and AI Ultimate—provide expanded access and will be bundled with the All Products Pack and dotUltimate subscriptions.

With this release, JetBrains aims to empower developers to work smarter, automate the repetitive, and focus on solving higher-level challenges.
